Haiti Has Been Hit By A Tropical Storm Just Days After A Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake Killed Over 2,000
Tropical Storm Grace drenched southern Haiti after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused heavy casualties, complicating relief efforts as the death toll surpassed 2,000.
Schools, medical centers, churches, bridges and more than 84,000 homes collapsed, leaving thousands homeless, according to Haitian NGO AVSI.
More than 10,000 people have been injured.
Rescue teams were searching for survivors under the rubble but were slowed by severe floods across the country. People struggled to look for their missing loved ones under heavy rains.
Hospitals were so full that doctors had to treat patients in the patios and corridors.
“The hospital is in a bad place, with water filling the yard,” a local doctor told the Guardian. “People are crying for help, for tents, for shelter and for a message of hope.”
Photos showed muddy water flooding streets and inundating shelters in refugee camps.
Other survivors were fearful to return to their homes, as they worried buildings may collapse in aftershocks or floods, and would rather sleep in tents.
The tropical storm moved away from Haiti on Tuesday morning, and relief efforts are managing to send over more supplies.
António Guterres, the UN’s secretary general, announced that the UN will continue to assist the victims with humanitarian aid, including providing medical supplies and health care, clean water, emergency shelter and more.
